Description

Welcome to Phonopolis, a puzzle-adventure game developed by the independent game team Amanita Design, who have also created games such as Machinarium, Creaks, and Samorost.

Paperback dystopia

In the dystopian city of Phonopolis, life is meticulously arranged by omnipresent horns that control every aspect of people’s lives. Citizens follow the commands of the authoritarian leader, working together to achieve his grand vision. Soon, “Absolute Pitch”—a tone so powerful it will forever deprive every citizen of their humanity—will ring out across the city…

Perhaps by chance, or perhaps by fate, young cleaner Felix becomes the only one who can recognize this threat. Now, he must find a way to stop the leader from turning every citizen into an ever-slaveless automaton. The story of Phonopolis draws inspiration from the works of Karel Čapek and George Orwell, exploring themes of social manipulation and individualism, while maintaining the game’s overall experience as light-hearted and engaging.

Play the city

As Felix becomes immune to various commands, you will be able to use those horns to solve puzzles involving other characters. At other times, you will interact with the paper environment in unusual and often unexpected ways, such as jumping over walls, changing floors, controlling various machines, or tearing apart paper curtains. Each puzzle is carefully integrated into this world, providing players with unique challenges.

A mix of new and old

Phonopolis is a city built with real paper, symbolizing the utopian dystopian social model. Every building, character, even smoke or flames, are hand-drawn on paper and then digitally processed to create the 3D world of the game, evoking the nostalgic charm of classic stop-motion animation films.

The game’s artistic style is inspired by avant-garde art movements of the interwar period, such as Constructivism, Futurism, and Dadaism, as well as the social impact of these art movements. Thomas Dovlatov’s music injects soul into the unique visual effects, and he is also the composer for the music of Machinarium and Samorost 3.
