Adobe Dimension CC 2019 (hereinafter referred to as Dimension) is a 3D design and rendering software designed specifically for Mac users. It seamlessly bridges 2D and 3D workflows, allowing designers to combine vector graphics, bitmap images, and 3D models to create realistic product visualizations, brand scenes, and abstract art. Its core advantages lie in deep integration with the Adobe Creative Cloud ecosystem, as well as an intuitive interface and a physically based rendering (PBR) engine, enabling designers without a strong 3D technical background to quickly produce high-quality visual effects.
I. Detailed Explanation of the Software’s Core Interface and Workspace
After launching Dimension, you will see a clearly laid out, modular user interface, mainly divided into the following key areas:
- Menu Bar and Application Bar: Located at the top of the screen. The menu bar contains all software commands, while the application bar provides quick access tools such as the “Select Tool,” “Grab Tool,” “Orbit Tool,” “Zoom Tool,” and rendering mode switching.
- Scene Panel (Left Side): This is the hierarchy manager for the entire 3D scene. It lists all scene elements in a tree structure, including models, groups, lights, cameras, and backgrounds. Here you can rename, select, hide/show, or lock elements.
- Properties Panel (right side): This is the core parameter control area. Its content changes dynamically based on the currently selected object.
- Scene: Set environment lighting, background color, or image.
- Model: Adjust the model’s position, rotation, and scale.
- Material: When a model surface or a specific material is selected, you can adjust color, roughness, metalness, bump, opacity, and other PBR material properties here.
- Lighting: Adjust parameters such as directional lights and image-based lighting (IBL).
- Camera: Adjust focal length, depth of field, and more.
- Canvas (central workspace): This is the real-time preview and operation area for the 3D scene. You can directly drag models and adjust the camera angle here. View control mainly relies on the mouse and keyboard shortcuts.
- Toolbar (left side or floating): Includes the “Selection Tool,” “Move/Rotate/Scale” Gizmo controllers, the “Match Image” tool, and more.
- Bottom Panel: Includes the “Assets” tab (which provides access to Adobe Stock 3D assets, local materials, and models) as well as the “Render” preview window.
II. Complete Workflow from Creation to Export
After launching the software, click “New File” on the main page or go through the menu bar File > New (shortcut Cmd+N) to create a project. In the dialog box that appears, you can set the canvas size, resolution, and background. To open an existing project, use File > Open (shortcut Cmd+O).
You can add a model in the following ways:
- From the “Adobe Stock” or “Local Assets” in the “Resources” panel at the bottom, drag and drop the model directly onto the canvas.
- Use the menu bar
File > Import > 3D Model.
After the model is imported, use the Gizmo controller on the canvas (which appears when the model is selected) or the “Model” tab in the “Properties” panel on the right to precisely adjust its position (X, Y, Z), rotation, and scale. Hold the Shift key while dragging to perform constrained operations.
This is the key step to give the model a realistic feel.
- Select the model on the canvas or in the “Scene” panel.
- Use the “Selection Tool” and hold the
Cmdkey to click on specific faces of the model, allowing you to select single or multiple faces for local material application. - From the “Materials” library in the “Resources” panel, drag the desired material directly onto the model or specific faces.
- In the “Material” tab of the “Properties” panel on the right, fine-tune the parameters. For example, drag a local image onto the “Base Color” channel to apply a texture; adjust the “Roughness” slider to control the surface reflectivity.
Lighting determines the atmosphere and realism of a scene.
- Environment Light: In the “Scene” tab of the “Properties Panel” on the right, you can load HDRI images as global lighting and environment reflections. Adjusting “Rotation” changes the light direction, and adjusting “Intensity” controls brightness.
- Directional Light: Drag “Directional Light” from the “Light” category in the “Resources” panel into the scene. You can adjust its color, intensity, angle, and shadow softness in the “Light” tab of the “Properties Panel”.
