Romance of the Three Kingdoms Classic is a turn-based ruler strategy game set from the late Eastern Han dynasty to the end of the Three Kingdoms period. Internal affairs and personnel, diplomacy and supply, and tactical command on the battlefield are all in your hands. Lead historical factions to contend for the realm, or use self-created officers and factions to start a new era of chaos.
Different battlefields require different paths to victory.
Will you besiege the city or breach the gates? Will you hold your formation steady or lure the enemy out and disrupt their deployment?
From siege battles and pass battles to grand engagements where armies clash, formation-focused field battles, mountain battles over high ground and supply lines, and naval battles commanding fleets—each battlefield has its own rules and commands.
In sieges, weigh the pressure from walls, gates, siege engines, and encirclement; in land battles, exploit formations, maneuver, and command counters to find openings in the enemy. Naval battles require arranging your fleet, maneuvering, and attacks into three command cards, revealed simultaneously with your opponent. Even with fire attacks fully prepared, a misjudged wind direction can turn the flames against you.
Combine officer skills, troop composition, morale, and weather to choose your next move. The same troops and the same orders can produce vastly different results depending on the battlefield and the opponent.
“Are you really going to camp on the mountain?”
Holding the high ground does not guarantee victory. In mountain battlefields like Jieting, holding supply lines is as important as leveraging terrain advantages.
This time, does Ma Su still have a chance to turn defeat around? You can still camp on the mountain, but the next step need not repeat the same mistake.
Frontal assault is not the only option. Crossing perilous routes like the Ziwu Valley and Yinping Road can also create opportunities to flank the enemy. But taking risky paths means bearing the risk of troop losses and exposing your movements.
Recruit famous generals, and more importantly, know how to use them well.
Let fierce warriors lead breakthroughs, strategists devise plans, and talents skilled in administration govern cities. An officer’s value is not determined by combat strength alone. Consider skills, temperament, loyalty, and personal relationships to decide who gets which task.
Historical officers in this title are portrayed based on their deeds and duties recorded in official histories and related historical sources. Learn about them through biographies, then grant offices and titles based on merit to cultivate the pillars of your faction.
Refreshed officer portraits and animated portraits for major figures add life to officer profiles and dialogue scenes. If you prefer the earlier art style, you can also use the official classic portrait pack via the Steam Workshop.
The foundation that sustains war lies within the cities.
How many troops you can mobilize matters, but next month’s military rations cannot be ignored either.
Manage population and public order, develop economy and agriculture, and appoint officers to build up cities. Improve internal affairs and military capabilities through research, and maintain long front lines with transport and reinforcements. In regions where naval battles may occur, naval proficiency and fleet damage will also affect the next clash.
Stabilize newly captured cities and send surplus from the rear to the front. Rather than endless expansion, a foundation that can be sustained over the long term often brings greater victories.
Use diplomacy to buy time and schemes to change the situation.
If you cannot defeat your opponent right now, first change the conditions of engagement.
Truces and alliances, joint attacks and aid, recruitment and prisoner negotiations, surrender and submission—all can create opportunities beyond the battlefield. You can also stir up conflict between two factions, forcing enemies to worry about another front.
Border forces cannot be ignored either. Establish relations with foreign peoples, or send expeditionary armies to the Wuhuan, Xianbei, Qiang, Nanman, and Shanyue to seek their submission and tribute. How long can troops and officers gathered from various cities campaign abroad? If an expedition fails, can you withstand the retaliation? These are all decisions the ruler must weigh personally.
At the crossroads of history, move toward different endings.
From the Anti-Dong Zhuo Coalition and the warlords’ division to Guandu, Red Cliffs, Wuzhang Plains, and the fall of Shu Han, each era has different faction dynamics, officer rosters, and historical events, bringing new challenges. Yufu is renamed Yong’an, Moling is renamed Jianye—place names on the map also record the changes of the times.
Unifying the realm is not the only challenge. Through official additional scenarios available on the Steam Workshop, you can complete the Northern Expedition objective, or lead the Shouchun rebels against the suppression army, experiencing distinctive goals and endings.
Choose campaign settings such as historical events, officer lifespans, and death in battle, and step into the chaotic era in the way you prefer.
Your officers, your scenario, your Three Kingdoms.
Create your own new officers, setting abilities, skills, portraits, and relationships. You can found a new faction or stand alongside historical figures to begin a different story.
Install official hero packs as needed to meet figures from other eras and cultural backgrounds; you can also add officer packs clearly labeled as Romance of the Three Kingdoms and fictional characters to stage duels that transcend historical fact.
In Scenario Studio, you can design the world you want to play. Based on the 62 cities of the main game, adjust faction and officer configurations, city resources, and diplomatic relations, write events and dialogue, and set short-term goals and exclusive endings.
Completed new officer packs and scenarios can be shared via ZIP files or the Steam Workshop. Download stories created by other players and embark on a new contest for the realm.
Command personally, or watch the tides of the realm unfold.
In spectator mode, witness wars, diplomacy, and the rise and fall of AI factions. Campaigns you lead personally can be revisited through replays and historical records. Your orders, your officers’ achievements, and your faction’s rise and fall will come together into a unique history.
For first-time players, start with the tutorial scenario and battle practice. Once familiar, launch new challenges according to your own conditions and goals.
Only the starting point is predetermined. The next chapter of the chaotic era is written by your commands.
