Description

Welcome to Phonopolis, the City of Horns

Phonopolis is a puzzle-adventure game developed by the independent game team Amanita Design, known for titles such as Machinarium, Creaks, and Samorost. They also created Phonopolis.

In the dystopian city of Phonopolis, life is meticulously orchestrated by omnipresent horns, which govern every aspect of people’s lives. Citizens follow the commands of the authoritarian leader, working together to achieve his grand vision. Soon, the “Absolute Pitch” – a tone so powerful it will forever deprive each citizen of their humanity – will ring throughout the city…

Perhaps by chance, or perhaps by fate, young cleaner Felix becomes the only one aware of this threat. Now, he must find a way to stop the leader from turning every citizen into an obedient, mindless slave. The story of Phonopolis draws inspiration from the works of Karel Čapek and George Orwell, exploring themes of social manipulation and individualism, while maintaining the game’s overall experience as light-hearted and engaging.

Playing the City

As Felix becomes immune to various commands, you will be able to use the horns to solve puzzles involving other characters. At other times, you will interact with the paper environment in unusual and often unexpected ways, such as jumping over walls, changing floors, controlling various machines, or tearing apart paper curtains. Each puzzle is carefully integrated into this world, providing players with unique challenges.

Intersecting Old and New

Phonopolis is a city built with real paper, symbolizing the utopian dystopian society. Every building, character, and even smoke or flame are hand-drawn on paper and then digitally processed to create the 3D world, evoking the nostalgic charm of classic stop-motion animation films.

The game’s artistic style is inspired by avant-garde art movements of the interwar period, such as Constructivism, Futurism, and Dadaism, as well as the social impact of these art movements as propaganda tools. Thomas Dovland’s music injects soul into the unique visual effects, and he is also the composer for the music of Machinarium and Samorost 3.

  • Story-driven adventure game set in the dystopian city of Phonopolis
  • 3D world created with hand-drawn paper
  • Traditional 12 FPS animation, reminiscent of classic stop-motion animation films
  • Various intricate puzzles integrated into paper-built scenes
