Important Notice: This article aims to objectively introduce the features and characteristics of PhpStorm software. We strongly recommend that users purchase a genuine license through JetBrains official channels. Using genuine software supports developers’ continuous innovation, provides stable updates and official technical support, and ensures data security and legal compliance. Using unauthorized software may bring security risks, legal issues, and no access to updates.
Installing PhpStorm on a Mac is not complicated, but following the correct steps can help you avoid many pitfalls. Below is a detailed guide to ensure you smoothly start your development journey.
Before installation, please confirm that your Mac meets the basic requirements. PhpStorm requires macOS 10.13 or later, at least 4GB of RAM (8GB+ recommended), and more than 2.5GB of available disk space. Ensure that the latest version of Xcode Command Line Tools is installed on your system; this can be triggered by running xcode-select --install in Terminal.
First, download the PhpStorm .dmg installer from the link we provide or from the JetBrains official website. After downloading, double-click the .dmg file to mount the disk image. You will see a window containing the PhpStorm icon; simply drag it to the “Applications” folder. This process is fully automatic and requires no additional operations.
Second, launch PhpStorm for the first time. You can find it in Launchpad or the Applications folder. After clicking the icon, the system may prompt “cannot be opened” because it is from an unidentified developer. In this case, go to “System Preferences” -> “Security & Privacy” -> “General” and click the “Open Anyway” button. This is a macOS security mechanism, not a software issue.
Third, import settings and activate. On first launch, an import settings wizard will pop up. If this is a fresh installation, select “Do not import settings.” Then you will enter the activation screen, where you can choose to enter an activation code, log in to your JetBrains account, or use the trial version. We recommend obtaining a genuine license through official channels.
For users accustomed to a Chinese interface, localization is very simple. After launching PhpStorm, click PhpStorm -> Preferences in the top menu bar. In the settings window that appears, select Plugins. Enter “Chinese” in the search box, find the “Chinese (Simplified) Language Pack” plugin, and click Install. After installation is complete, restart the IDE and the interface will become Chinese.
After installation, the most critical step is to configure the PHP interpreter. Open PhpStorm, click PhpStorm -> Preferences in the menu bar, then select Languages & Frameworks -> PHP. Click the ... button to the right of CLI Interpreter and select the + sign to add a local interpreter. If you have installed PHP via Homebrew, the system will usually detect it automatically. If not, manually select the PHP executable file path.
To help you solve problems that may arise in actual use, we have compiled the following 8 high-frequency questions and answers.
This situation is usually not because the file is actually damaged, but because macOS’s Gatekeeper security mechanism is blocking it. Solution: Open the “Terminal” app, enter the command sudo spctl --master-disable and press Enter, then enter your Mac password (it will not be displayed while typing). Then check “Anywhere” in “Security & Privacy.”
We do not recommend frequently resetting the trial period, as this violates JetBrains’ terms of use. If you really need to reset it for evaluation, you can try deleting specific configuration files. However, please note that this may cause data loss. We recommend purchasing a genuine license to enjoy stable service.
This may be due to corrupted indexes or cache issues. You can try clicking File -> Invalidate Caches / Restart... in the menu bar, and select Invalidate and Restart in the dialog box that appears. PhpStorm will clear the cache and rebuild the index, after which code completion usually returns to normal.
PhpStorm supports importing settings from IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse. An import wizard will appear on first launch. If you missed it, you can manually import via File -> Manage IDE Settings -> Import Settings. Select the corresponding settings file or directory.
This is normal. The Chinese language pack mainly covers the core interface and common options; some advanced features or third-party plugin settings may still be displayed in English. This does not affect usage and can actually help you compare with official documentation while learning.
This is usually because PhpStorm has not correctly configured the environment variables for the PHP interpreter. Please go to Preferences -> Languages & Frameworks -> PHP -> CLI Interpreter and ensure that the interpreter path you selected includes the Composer executable file. Alternatively, you can run php composer.phar in PhpStorm’s terminal.
There are two common reasons for ineffective breakpoints. First, Xdebug configuration is incorrect; please check the xdebug.mode and xdebug.start_with_request settings in php.ini. Second, the “phone” icon (Start Listening for PHP Debug Connections) in PhpStorm is not enabled. Make sure this button is enabled.
Uninstalling PhpStorm is not just deleting the application. You need to first delete PhpStorm from the “Applications” folder. Then, open Finder, press Shift + Command + G, enter ~/Library/, and manually delete the three folders Logs/JetBrains/PhpStorm, Preferences/com.jetbrains.phpstorm, and Caches/JetBrains/PhpStorm.
