DaisyDisk for Mac is an elegantly designed and powerful disk space analysis tool. It visualizes the usage of disks or folders through an intuitive sunburst chart, helping users quickly locate and clean up files and folders that take up large amounts of space, thereby efficiently managing Mac storage.

1. Core Interface and Workspace Overview

After launching DaisyDisk, its interface is mainly divided into the following core areas:

  1. Scan Selection Panel: The first interface that appears after launch, listing all analyzable disk volumes (such as “Macintosh HD”) and common folders (such as “Applications”, “Users”).
  2. Analysis Visualization Main View: The core workspace after scanning is complete.
    • Central Ring: Represents the root directory of the disk or folder currently being viewed.
    • Radial Sectors: Radiating from the center outward, each sector represents a file or folder. The larger the area, the more disk space it occupies.
    • Color Coding: Different types of files or folders are distinguished by different colors, with the legend located at the bottom left of the interface.
    • Path Navigation Bar: Located at the top of the interface, displaying the full path of the current browsing location.
  3. Side Toolbar: Located on the right side of the interface.
    • “Collector” Panel: Used to temporarily store files planned for deletion, allowing unified review before final confirmation.
    • File Preview Panel: After selecting a file, this area displays detailed information such as thumbnails, size, and path, and supports Quick Look preview.
  4. Bottom Status Bar: Displays the size and number of currently selected items, as well as total and available disk space.

2. Complete Workflow: From Analysis to Cleanup

1. Launch and Select Scan Target

Steps:

  1. Click the DaisyDisk icon in the “Applications” folder or Launchpad to launch the software.
  2. In the initial scan selection panel, click the disk volume you want to analyze (e.g., “Macintosh HD”).
  3. Alternatively, click the Scan Folder… button at the bottom of the panel to select a specific folder for analysis.

Shortcuts: After selecting a disk, press Return or Command + O to start scanning.

2. Scanning and Analysis

After clicking the target, DaisyDisk starts scanning. During scanning, the interface dynamically displays the folder being analyzed. When scanning is complete, it automatically enters the visualization main view. According to our tests, scanning a 500GB SSD typically takes 1-2 minutes, depending on the number of files and disk speed.

3. Browse and Locate Large Files

How to operate:

  • Drill Down: In the main view’s sector chart, single-click any sector to “drill into” that folder and view its internal composition.
  • Go Back: Click the parent folder name in the top path navigation bar, or double-click the central blank area of the main view.
  • Quick Locate: Hover the mouse over a sector to highlight the path and size of that item. The sector with the largest area is usually the main space consumer.

Shortcuts:
Command + [: Go back to the previous directory.
Command + ]: Enter the next directory (if a sub-item is selected).
Space: Use Quick Look to preview the selected file.

4. Manage Files: Preview and Mark for Deletion

Specific methods:

  1. Preview Files: Select a file in the sector chart, and the right preview panel will display its details. Click the eye icon on the preview panel or press Space for a full-screen Quick Look preview.
  2. Show in Finder: After selecting a file, click the Show in Finder button below the preview panel, or press Command + R.
  3. Mark for Deletion (Add to Collector):
    • Drag the file/folder to the “Collector” panel on the right.
    • Or after selecting an item, click the Add to Collector button at the bottom right of the interface.
    • Or after selecting an item, press the shortcut Command + Delete.

All marked items are summarized in the “Collector” panel, and the total space that can be freed is calculated. At this stage, files are not actually deleted.

5. Review and Final Deletion

Location and steps:

  1. Click the Collector tab in the right toolbar and carefully review each item in the list to confirm whether it can be deleted.
  2. To remove an item from the collector, select it and click the Remove button below the list.
  3. After confirmation, click the red Delete button at the bottom of the collector panel.
  4. DaisyDisk will pop up a final confirmation dialog, reminding you again that these files will be permanently deleted (bypassing the Trash). Click Delete to confirm.
Warning: Files deleted through DaisyDisk’s “Collector” bypass the Trash and are permanently deleted. Please confirm before proceeding.

6. Export Analysis Report

If you need to share or save the analysis results, you can export a report.

Method: Click the menu bar File -> Export Chart… or press Command + E. You can choose to export the current view as PNG, PDF, or CSV (including a detailed file list).

3. Advanced Tips for Common Features

  1. Quickly Scan Common Locations: In the scan selection panel of the main interface, besides the entire disk, the system presets common folders such as “Applications”, “Users”, and “Desktop”. Click to quickly analyze specific areas.
  2. Use “Focus” Filter: In the visualization main view, use the search box in the upper right corner (or press Command + F) to quickly filter files and folders by name.
  3. Keep a “Safe Zone”: You can drag important folders (such as project folders) to the “Safe Zone” at the bottom right of the interface. Items in the safe zone are displayed in gray in the analysis chart, reminding you to avoid accidental deletion.
  4. Analyze Hidden Files: By default, DaisyDisk ignores system hidden files. To analyze them, check the Show Hidden Items checkbox at the bottom left of the scan dialog before or during scanning.
  5. Compare Multiple Analyses: You can open multiple DaisyDisk windows simultaneously (Command + N) to analyze different disks or the same disk at different times, and compare side by side to discover space changes.

4. Common Issues and Solutions

  1. Issue: Scanning is very slow or gets stuck.
    • Solution: The disk may have a large number of small files or errors. Try scanning a smaller subfolder first. Ensure your Mac has enough memory available and temporarily close other large applications.
  2. Issue: Unable to delete certain files, with “The operation can’t be completed” or no permission.
    • Solution: These are usually system files or files protected by System Integrity Protection (SIP). DaisyDisk cannot delete them directly. For non-system-critical files, try opening them in Finder with Command + R and then manually deleting them in Finder (administrator password may be required).
  3. Issue: What do the chart sector colors represent?
    • Solution: Check the legend at the bottom left of the interface. Typically, blue represents folders, orange represents applications, green represents documents, purple represents media files, etc. The color scheme can be customized in DaisyDisk -> Preferences… -> Chart tab.
  4. Issue: Accidentally added a file to the collector, how to remove it?
    • Solution: Open the “Collector” panel, select the mistakenly added item, and click the Remove button below the panel to clear it from the pending deletion list.
  5. Issue: DaisyDisk scan results are inconsistent with the storage space shown in “About This Mac”.
    • Solution: This is usually because DaisyDisk does not scan system hidden files by default. Try checking “Show Hidden Items” during scanning to get more comprehensive data. Also, the macOS system itself occupies some space for Time Machine snapshots, etc., which may not be fully accounted for.
  6. Issue: How to recover files deleted by DaisyDisk?
    • Solution: Unfortunately, files deleted through DaisyDisk’s “Collector” are permanently deleted and do not go to the Trash. Once confirmed, they cannot be recovered through normal means. It is recommended to review carefully before deletion or use Time Machine backups for recovery.
  7. Issue: Does DaisyDisk support analyzing external hard drives or network drives?
    • Solution: Yes, DaisyDisk supports analyzing any volume mounted on your Mac, including external USB hard drives, SD cards, and NAS shared folders connected via network. Simply select the corresponding disk in the scan selection panel.
  8. Issue: Why are some files displayed in gray in DaisyDisk?
    • Solution: Gray usually indicates that the file or folder has been added to the “Safe Zone”. This is a protection mechanism to remind you that these items are important and should be avoided from accidental deletion. To delete them, you need to remove them from the safe zone first.
