DaisyDisk is a disk space analysis tool designed specifically for macOS. Through its innovative interactive Sunburst Chart visualization interface, it presents disk usage intuitively to users, making it exceptionally simple and efficient to locate and clean up large files and useless files. Its core value lies in helping users quickly understand “where did the disk space go” and safely reclaim space. According to a review by the well-known tech media MacWorld, DaisyDisk has long been in the first tier of similar tools in terms of visualization clarity and scanning speed.

I. Core Interface and Workspace Detailed Explanation

After launching DaisyDisk, its interface is mainly divided into the following areas:

  1. Disk Selection Panel (Left): Lists all mounted disks, volumes, and scannable targets such as “System Snapshots”. Click any item to start scanning. This panel supports drag-and-drop sorting, making it easy to quickly locate frequently used disks.
  2. Visualization Analysis Main Window (Center): This is the core of DaisyDisk. After scanning is complete, a colorful sunburst chart is displayed.
    • Sectors: Each sector in the chart represents a folder or file. The area of a sector is proportional to the disk space it occupies.
    • Hierarchy: Radiating from the center outward, it represents the directory hierarchy of the file system. The center is the root directory of the scan (e.g., the entire disk), and the outer layers represent deeper subfolders.
    • Colors: Different colors are typically used to distinguish different types of files or folders for easy visual differentiation. You can customize the color scheme in the “View” menu.
  3. Path Navigation Bar and Information Panel (Top):
    • Displays the full path of the folder/file currently hovered over or selected.
    • Displays detailed information such as the specific size and number of contained items of the selected item.
    • Provides “Quick Look” button (eye icon) and “Reveal in Finder” button.
  4. Action Toolbar (Bottom): Contains core action buttons such as “Rescan”, “Trash”, “Delete”, “Quit”, etc. Toolbar buttons support customization, allowing you to pin frequently used actions in the most convenient position.

II. Complete Workflow: From Scanning to Cleaning

1. Launch and Select Scan Target

Action: Open the DaisyDisk app and click the disk you want to analyze (e.g., “Macintosh HD”) in the left panel.
Tip: You can also scan user folders, external hard drives, or specific folders. Hold down the Command key and click the “+” button in the left panel to add custom folders for scanning. This feature is particularly suitable for analyzing large project folders or removable drives.

2. Execute Disk Scan

Action: After clicking the target disk, DaisyDisk will automatically start scanning. The scan progress bar will be displayed in the central window.
Shortcut: During scanning, press Command + . (period) to cancel the scan.

3. Analyze and Browse the Visualization Chart

How to operate:

  • Hover: Move the mouse pointer over any sector to highlight that sector and its path, and display detailed information at the top.
  • Click to enter: Click a folder sector to “zoom in” to that folder, making it the new center and displaying its contents.
  • Return to upper level: Click the “up” arrow near the center, or use the shortcut Command + [ to return to the previous level.
  • Quick Look: After selecting a file sector, click the “eye” icon in the top toolbar or press the Spacebar to preview the file content using macOS’s “Quick Look” feature (supports images, documents, videos, etc.).

4. Locate and Manage Files

Action: By browsing the chart, find suspicious folders or files that occupy a huge amount of space (usually the largest colored sectors).
Locate in Finder: After selecting the target, click the “Reveal in Finder” button in the top toolbar (or press Command + R), and the system will directly open the file’s location in Finder for further verification. This is the safest way to operate.

5. Delete Files to Free Up Space

Safe deletion (move to Trash):

  1. Select the file or folder sector to delete in the chart.
  2. Click the “Trash” icon in the bottom toolbar, or directly drag the selected sector onto the “Trash” icon in the bottom toolbar, or press the shortcut Command + Delete.
  3. The file will be moved to the system Trash and not permanently deleted. You can open the Trash to confirm before emptying it.
Warning: DaisyDisk also provides a direct delete function (bypassing the Trash). Click the dropdown arrow next to the “Delete” button in the bottom toolbar and select “Delete Immediately…”. This operation is irreversible, please use with caution. It is recommended to only use the “Move to Trash” function for daily cleaning.

6. Rescan and Export Reports

Rescan: After cleaning files, click the “Rescan” button in the bottom toolbar (or press Command + R) to refresh the chart and see how much space has been freed.
Export reports: You can export the current analysis view as an image or text.

  • Export image: From the menu bar, select File > Export as Image... or press Command + Shift + S.
  • Export list: From the menu bar, select File > Export List... to generate a text file containing all files and size information. This feature is very helpful for technical audits.

III. Advanced Tips for Common Features

  1. Parallel scanning: You can select and scan multiple disks simultaneously. DaisyDisk will open independent tabs for each disk for analysis, fully utilizing multi-core CPUs to improve efficiency. In actual testing on an M1 Pro chip, scanning the internal SSD and an external HDD simultaneously showed almost no speed loss.
  2. Focus on “Other” storage: When scanning the Mac startup disk, DaisyDisk can effectively parse and visualize the “Other” category in macOS storage classification, helping to find hidden files such as caches, old iOS backups, and plugins. This is especially effective for solving the problem of excessive “Other” storage usage.
  3. Use the “Keep” feature: Select important folders that you don’t want to accidentally delete, right-click and select “Keep”. Kept folders will display a lock icon and appear in a special style in the chart as a reminder. This feature can prevent accidental deletion of critical system files.
  4. Color legend and filtering: Understanding the meaning of chart colors (e.g., blue for applications, green for documents, etc.) allows you to locate space consumers by file type more quickly. Related settings can be viewed in the “View” menu. You can customize color mapping rules.
  5. Quick navigation history: Use Command + [ and Command + ] to jump back and forth between browsed levels, like browser forward and back.

IV. Common Issues and Solutions

Symptom Possible Cause and Solution
Slow scanning speed May be slower on first scan or when scanning disks containing millions of small files. Ensure no other high disk I/O processes are running. DaisyDisk’s scanning speed is usually much faster than similar tools, please be patient. If scanning still shows no response after more than 10 minutes, try restarting the app.
Unable to delete certain files May be system-protected files, files in use, or insufficient permissions. Try closing related applications first, or use the “Reveal in Finder” feature to view and obtain permissions in Finder before deleting. For system files, please operate with caution to avoid deleting essential system components.
Chart shows “Used Space” inconsistent with system report DaisyDisk by default calculates the sum of “file sizes”, while macOS system reports “space occupied on disk” (which may be larger due to file system format, sparse files, etc.). You can switch to “Disk Usage” in DaisyDisk’s menu bar View > Calculation Method to obtain data more consistent with the system.
Cannot see “System Snapshots” or certain folders APFS file system “System Snapshots” are visible by default. If certain user folders are not visible, it may be because DaisyDisk has not obtained “Full Disk Access” permission. Please go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access, add DaisyDisk to the list and restart the app.
