Tidy Up 5 is a modern duplicate file finder and disk organizer for professional users. It is known for its powerful customizable search capabilities, deep support for professional applications (such as Adobe Lightroom, Photos, iTunes, etc.), and efficient index-free scanning. This guide will detail its core interface, complete workflow, and advanced tips.

I. Core Interface and Workspace Overview

The interface of Tidy Up 5 has been redesigned and is mainly divided into the following areas:

  1. Top Toolbar: Contains core action buttons such as “Search”, “Stop”, “Mark/Unmark”, “Delete”, etc.
  2. Left Sidebar:
    • Search Mode Selection: Switch between “Simple Mode” (predefined searches) and “Advanced Mode” (fully customizable).
    • Search Sources: Add or select folders, disks, or specific application libraries (such as Lightroom, Photos) to scan.
    • Search Criteria (Advanced Mode): Stack and combine various criteria (such as filename, content, date, tags, etc.) here to build precise search strategies.
  3. Central Results Panel:
    • Organizes results in tabs, automatically categorized by file type (music, images, documents, folders, etc.) by default.
    • Within each tab, use the view toggle buttons to switch between Grid View (icon preview) and List View (detailed file information).
    • Each tab has its own Smart Box filter at the top, allowing further refinement of results by attributes such as album, playlist, mailbox, etc.
  4. Right Inspector Panel: When any file is selected, this area displays its detailed information, preview, metadata, and a list of all duplicate copies for easy comparison.
  5. Bottom Status Bar: Shows scan progress, total number of items found, number of marked items, and estimated storage space that can be freed.

II. Complete Workflow: From Creating a Search to Exporting Results

1. Create/Open a New Search Project

Steps:

  1. Launch Tidy Up 5; the software will automatically prepare a new blank search project.
  2. To open a previously saved search strategy, click File > Open in the menu bar, or use the shortcut Cmd + O.

2. Select Search Mode and Configure Search Sources

Steps:

  1. At the top of the left sidebar, select Simple Mode or Advanced Mode.
    • Simple Mode: Choose directly from over 80 predefined smart searches (such as “Duplicate Images”, “Empty Folders”, “Unused Applications”).
    • Advanced Mode: Click the “+” button to add and combine criteria from the list (such as “Same Content”, “Name Contains”, “Created Before…”).
  2. In the “Search Sources” area, click the “+” button to add locations to scan. You can add:
    • Local folders or disks.
    • Specific application libraries: Select “Application Libraries”, then check Lightroom, Photos, iTunes, etc. Supports adding and comparing multiple libraries simultaneously.

3. Execute Search

Steps:

  1. Click the “Search” button (magnifying glass icon) in the top toolbar, or press the shortcut Cmd + R.
  2. The scan begins, with progress shown in the bottom status bar. You can click the “Stop” button (square icon) or press Cmd + . to abort at any time.

4. Review and Mark Results

Steps:

  1. Browse the results in the central panel. Use different tabs and Smart Box filters to focus on specific types of files.
  2. After selecting a file, view its copies in the right inspector panel and decide which one to keep (usually the one with the most recent date and most reasonable path).
  3. Mark files to process:
    • Manual Marking: Click the checkbox next to a file, or select it and press the spacebar.
    • Auto Marking: Click the “Auto Mark” button (magic wand icon) in the top toolbar; the software will automatically mark suggested copies to delete based on preset rules (such as keeping the latest version).
    • Use the shortcut Cmd + M to mark selected items, and Cmd + Shift + M to unmark.

5. Process Marked Items

Steps:

  1. Click the “Delete” button (trash can icon) in the top toolbar, or press Cmd + Delete.
  2. In the pop-up action menu, choose the processing method:
    • Move to Trash: The most common deletion method.
    • Delete Permanently: Bypass the Trash and erase directly (use with caution).
    • Move to Folder / Copy to Folder: Transfer files instead of deleting them.
    • Replace with Hard Link/Symbolic Link/Alias (advanced feature): Delete duplicate files but use links pointing to the single retained file, so some applications can still access them normally. This feature requires enabling the relevant options in the search criteria in “Advanced Mode”.
  3. Confirm the action to complete processing.

6. Save Project and Export Report

Steps:

  1. Save Search Strategy: Click File > Save or Save As (Cmd + S / Cmd + Shift + S) in the menu bar to save the current configured search sources and criteria as a “.tidyupsearch” file for future reuse.
  2. Export Results Report: Click File > Export in the menu bar to export the current search results list as a text, CSV, or HTML report for recording or analysis.

III. Advanced Tips for Common Features

  1. Use “Unique Items” Search: In “Advanced Mode”, you can create a search for “unique items” (files with no duplicates). This is very useful for archiving or cleaning up isolated specific files.
  2. Customize File Type Tabs: You can edit the default file type categories. Go to Tidy Up > Preferences > Kinds to add, modify, or delete file type rules.
  3. Deep Integration with Application Libraries: When searching Lightroom or Photos libraries, use the “Smart Box” to filter by album, project, or keyword for precise deduplication within the library.
  4. Use Search Criteria Combinations: In “Advanced Mode”, by dragging to adjust the order and nesting of criteria (using “Any/All” logic groups), you can build extremely complex and precise searches, such as “Find PDF files with the same name and same content but created before last January and not in the ‘Archive’ folder”.
  5. Batch Preview and Decision-Making: In List View, select multiple files; the right inspector will show common attributes of all selected files and allow batch operations in the “Copies” list.

IV. Common Issues and Solutions

  1. Issue: Slow scan speed.

Solution: Ensure you have not added the entire system drive or too many large network volumes as search sources. Prioritize scanning specific folders or user directories. Tidy Up is index-free, so scan speed is directly related to the number and size of files.

  2. Issue: Important files accidentally deleted.

Solution: If you chose “Move to Trash”, immediately go to the Trash to recover. It is recommended to use the “Copy to Folder” function to back up marked items before processing, and delete only after confirmation.

  3. Issue: Cannot scan certain system-protected files or folders.

Solution: This is normal behavior due to macOS System Integrity Protection (SIP). Tidy Up cannot and does not recommend modifying areas protected by the system core. Please limit search sources to user directories (~/) or data drives.

  4. Issue: The “Hard Link” option is unavailable or applications report errors after the operation.

Solution: Hard links do not support directories and require the source and destination to be on the same volume. Some applications (such as certain database-type apps) may not correctly recognize hard-linked files. This feature is for advanced users; for general documents and media files, a safer choice is to use “Symbolic Link” or simply “Move to Folder”.

  5. Issue: A large number of seemingly unrelated files appear in search results.

Solution: Check your search criteria. In “Advanced Mode”, the criteria may be too broad. Try adding more criteria to narrow it down, such as adding both “Same Content” and “Extension is”. Using predefined searches in “Simple Mode” can reduce complexity.
