Installing SnippetsLab is straightforward, but there are a few key steps to note to avoid activation failure. Here is the complete process we have tested multiple times.
Download the SnippetsLab for Mac v1.8.5 installer from the link provided on this page. After downloading, double-click the .dmg file to mount it. You will see a window containing the app icon and the “Applications” folder.
Drag the SnippetsLab icon directly onto the “Applications” folder icon on the right. This is the standard installation method on macOS, and the system will automatically complete the rest.
Open the “Applications” folder, find and double-click the SnippetsLab icon. Since this is a third-party downloaded app, macOS may show a “cannot verify developer” warning. At this point, click “Cancel” and do not click “Move to Trash”.
Open “System Preferences” > “Security & Privacy” > “General”. You will see a message: “SnippetsLab” was blocked from opening. Click the “Open Anyway” button, and then click “Open” again in the confirmation dialog. The app will then run normally.
After the first launch, the software may be in English. Please follow the instructions in the “Activation Instructions.txt” included in the archive. This usually contains a registration code file or activation patch. Copy the activation file to the specified directory and restart the software to complete activation. You can also switch to Chinese in the preferences.
We have compiled the most common questions users encounter when using SnippetsLab, along with detailed answers.
A: It natively supports iCloud sync, ensuring your code library stays consistent between your Mac and iPhone/iPad. Additionally, you can change the database storage path to work with third-party cloud sync services like Dropbox or Google Drive. This is very friendly for cross-platform users.
A: SnippetsLab supports importing from CodeBox (.cbxml) files. You can also import existing snippets via GitHub Gist. For other tools, it is recommended to export as JSON or plain text first, then import manually or via script into SnippetsLab.
A: Please check if the SnippetsLab main app is running in the background. The menu bar assistant relies on the main app’s services. If the problem persists, try reconfiguring the “Menu Bar Assistant” shortcut in preferences. Ensure the shortcut does not conflict with other apps.
A: First, confirm that you have selected the correct programming language for the snippet. In the bottom right corner of the snippet editor, there is a language selector. If your target language is not in the list, make sure SnippetsLab is updated to the latest version, as it includes the latest syntax packages.
A: In the left sidebar, right-click on “Library” or any folder and select “New Folder”. You can create nested relationships by dragging and dropping folders. It is recommended to plan your folder structure by project or tech stack, such as “Frontend/React/Hooks”.
A: Although there is no direct plugin, you can achieve quick pasting through the system’s “Share” menu or by setting global shortcuts. A more advanced method is using Alfred workflows to search and insert code from SnippetsLab directly within VS Code.
A: By default, automatic backup files are stored in the user’s “~/Library/Application Support/com.renfei.SnippetsLab/backups/” directory. You can view and restore historical versions through the “Backup” option in preferences. It is recommended to manually export a complete database periodically.
A: Please check whether the activation file you are using matches the current version. The activation patch for v1.8.5 cannot be used for older versions. If the problem persists, try completely uninstalling and reinstalling, and ensure the activation file is placed in the correct location before launching.
