Installing Dash for Mac is not complicated, but following the steps can avoid issues. We have organized the following process for your reference.
First, ensure you have downloaded the correct installation package from the link provided on this page. The file is usually in .dmg format.
After downloading, double-click the .dmg file to mount it. You will see a new disk image appear on your desktop.
This is the most classic installation method for Mac applications. In the pop-up window, you will see the Dash icon and a shortcut pointing to the “Applications” folder.
Drag the Dash icon directly onto the “Applications” folder icon on the right. The system will automatically start copying files.
After installation, go to the “Applications” folder, find Dash, and double-click to open it. Since it is not from the App Store, macOS may pop up a security warning.
If you encounter a “Cannot verify developer” prompt, go to “System Preferences” > “Security & Privacy” > “General” and click the “Open Anyway” button. This is Apple’s normal protection to prevent malware.
After the first launch, Dash will prompt for a license or enter trial mode. Depending on the version you downloaded, select “Activate” and enter the provided serial number or registration code.
After successful activation, you can start configuring documentation sets and code snippets. It is recommended to first download the documentation sets for your most commonly used programming languages.
We have collected the most common questions users encounter and provided answers, hoping to help you.
Please check if the documentation sets need updating. In Dash’s “Preferences” > “Downloads”, you can view and update all installed documentation sets.
Also, ensure your network connection is normal. Dash periodically checks for updates, but you can also manually click the “Check for Updates” button.
First, install the extension named “Dash” in VS Code. After installation, select code in VS Code and press the shortcut key to jump to Dash search.
The default shortcut is usually Ctrl + H or Cmd + H, and you can customize it in VS Code’s keyboard shortcut settings.
This is usually due to permission issues. Please ensure that Dash is checked in “System Preferences” > “Security & Privacy” > “Accessibility”.
Also, check in Dash’s “Preferences” > “General” whether the global shortcut for “Code Snippets” is correctly set and not occupied by other applications.
Try rebuilding the search index. In Dash’s “Preferences” > “Downloads”, select all documentation sets and click “Rebuild Index”.
This process may take some time, but after completion, the search speed will return to optimal. This is similar to organizing a database.
Dash documentation set files are stored in the ~/Library/Application Support/Dash/DocSets/ directory.
You can directly copy the contents of this folder to colleagues, and they can place it in the same path. However, please note that some documentation sets may involve copyright.
In the Dash main interface, click the “Snippets” tab on the left. Click the “+” button in the lower left corner, enter the name, description, and code content.
You can also set tags, language, and shortcuts. Using placeholders (like @cursor) can greatly improve insertion efficiency.
Dash supports integration with mainstream browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. After installing the corresponding browser extension, you can select technical terms on a webpage and quickly search in Dash.
This is very convenient when reading technical blogs or online documentation, saving the trouble of manually switching windows.
Mastering shortcuts can significantly improve operational efficiency. Here are some very useful shortcut combinations in Dash, organized in a table for your reference.
