Parallels Desktop is one of the oldest and most popular virtualization applications on the macOS platform. For Mac users who need to run other operating systems on Apple devices, although there are multiple options on the market, Parallels Desktop stands out for its exceptional intuitiveness and friendliness to new users.
The application allows users to seamlessly run Windows, various Linux distributions, ChromeOS, Android, and other operating systems in virtual machines. Its setup and configuration process is highly automated and enables deep integration of the virtualized operating system with the macOS environment.
Parallels Desktop combines speed, power, and convenience to meet diverse needs: whether running specific Windows-only software or helping users migrate from a PC to a Mac and transfer data.
On the full range of Mac devices including MacBook, iMac, Mac mini, or Mac Pro, you can run Windows and macOS simultaneously without rebooting. Users can easily share files and folders between the two systems, enabling cross-platform copy-paste and drag-and-drop operations.
Parallels Desktop intelligently detects user needs and guides users through initial setup in just a few minutes. If you need to install Windows, the program will prompt you to download Windows 10, or allow you to select an existing Windows, Linux, Ubuntu, or even Boot Camp partition for configuration.
Even when running graphics- and resource-intensive Windows applications (such as Adobe Photoshop, Visual Studio, SketchUp, or AutoDesk Revit), it maintains smooth performance without slowing down the host macOS system.
Please note: The following tips are mainly for obtaining and installing a specific version.
This update improves overall stability and security and fixes the following issues:
Since Microsoft has stopped signing driver programs for older Windows operating systems, Parallels Desktop will no longer support Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1. These versions will no longer receive maintenance or security updates.

Many users may find the configuration process complicated when first encountering virtual machine software. However, Parallels Desktop was designed to simplify all of this, making it easy for beginners to get started. The following detailed step-by-step guide will help you avoid pitfalls.
Before starting the installation, please ensure your Mac meets the basic requirements. The recommended operating system is macOS Big Sur 11.0 or later. At least 4GB of RAM and 600MB of disk space are required for the installer itself. If you plan to run Windows 11, it is recommended to have at least 8GB of RAM and more than 50GB of free disk space.
After downloading the installation package from the link we provide, you will typically get a .dmg disk image file. Double-click to open it, and you will see the installer icon and a document titled “Must Read Before Installation.” It is strongly recommended that you open this document first, as it contains specific instructions and activation guidance for this version.
Double-click the “Install Parallels Desktop” icon in the .dmg file, and the system will prompt you to enter your Mac administrator password. This is to authorize the installer to write files to the “Applications” folder. After entering the password, the installation wizard will start, and the whole process usually takes only 1-2 minutes.
After installation is complete, Parallels Desktop will automatically launch and enter the “New Virtual Machine” wizard. At this point, you don’t need to do anything manually; the program will intelligently detect your needs. If you have never installed Windows, it will prompt you to download Windows 10 or Windows 11.
In the “New Virtual Machine” window, you can choose to get Windows from Microsoft or use an existing ISO image file. If you have a Windows ISO file on hand, simply drag and drop it into the window. Parallels Desktop will automatically recognize the system version.
After clicking “Continue,” the program will ask about the primary use of your virtual machine: productivity, gaming, design, or software development. This choice is crucial because it presets the CPU, memory, and graphics resource allocation for the virtual machine. For example, selecting “Gaming” will prioritize allocating more graphics resources.
Once configuration is complete, Parallels Desktop will begin automatically installing Windows. This process requires no manual intervention; it automatically handles driver installation, system settings, and other tedious steps. You just need to wait patiently and can enjoy a cup of coffee in the meantime.
After installation, Windows will start for the first time and perform some basic setup, such as selecting language and setting a username and password. Parallels Desktop will guide you through these steps. When you see the Windows desktop, it means the virtual machine has successfully started.
This is a key step to enhance the experience. Parallels Tools is a set of drivers that enables smooth mouse movement, folder sharing, drag-and-drop operations, better graphics performance, and more. After the Windows virtual machine starts, you will see the Parallels icon in the bottom-right corner of the Windows taskbar.
Right-click the icon and select “Install Parallels Tools.” Windows will then automatically run the installer. Follow the prompts to complete the installation and restart the virtual machine. After restarting, you will find that the mouse can move seamlessly between Mac and Windows without pressing any shortcut keys.
Users often encounter some issues during use. Below are 5 high-frequency questions and their solutions, hoping to help you.
This issue is usually caused by system security policies. First, try restarting your Mac, which can sometimes resolve temporary conflicts. If that doesn’t work, go to “System Preferences” > “Security & Privacy” > “General” and check if there is blocked software; click “Open Anyway.”
If the problem persists, please check the instructions in the “Must Read Before Installation” document. Some versions require special activation steps. Be sure to confirm that you have disabled the software’s automatic update feature, as updating a non-official version may cause the license to become invalid.
Lag is usually caused by insufficient resource allocation. Open Parallels Desktop, go to “Control Center,” right-click your virtual machine, and select “Configure.” In the “Hardware” tab, increase the number of CPU cores and memory allocation. It is recommended to allocate at least 2 CPU cores and 4GB of RAM.
Also, check your Mac’s own resource usage. If your Mac’s memory is already tight, the virtual machine will naturally be affected. Close some unnecessary background applications or consider upgrading your Mac’s physical memory.
By default, Parallels Desktop has already enabled the shared folders feature. You can find the “Parallels Shared Folders” directory in Mac’s Finder, which will display the Windows Documents and Desktop folders. Conversely, you can also see the Mac’s shared directories in Windows’ “Network” location.
If you need to customize shared folders, you can set them in the virtual machine’s “Configure” > “Options” > “Sharing.” Click the “+” button and select the Mac folder you want to share. This way, both systems can seamlessly access these files.
When a USB device is plugged into the Mac, you need to decide which system to connect it to. By default, Parallels Desktop will prompt you to choose. If you don’t see the prompt, click the Parallels icon in the Mac menu bar, select “Devices” > “USB,” and manually check your device.
If the device is still not recognized, make sure the USB controller is enabled in the virtual machine configuration. In “Hardware” > “USB & Bluetooth,” select “USB 3.0” for best compatibility. Some older devices may need to be switched to USB 2.0.
Shutting down a virtual machine is simple: shut down normally within Windows, or click the Parallels menu bar icon and select “Actions” >
